The thesis represents the final act of a course of study and must be drawn up carefully. Let’s see together an example of a thesis and the advice for a correct elaboration.
The university, except for some technical-scientific subjects, is strictly structured in a verbal manner, that is, the teachers present the teaching contents during the lessons in a discourse and the students show that they have learned the concepts heard through the oral exams. In other words, the students, after having followed the discipline of interest for the semester and have studied the textbooks, the lecture notes and, obviously, the notes, support the verification interview before the commission composed by the professor and the various assistants. The exam mark is the sum of various elements, such as the understanding of the topic, the ability to make comparisons and analogies and the fluid exposure. There are very few written exams and they are characterized by the presence of short questions with open or multiple answers.
All this orality highlights an evident difficulty of the students who, in their approach with the preparation of the final paper, do not literally know where to start. Writing a thesis is certainly not a simple thing as you need to follow a certain pattern that varies depending on the discipline in question in order to reach the maximum score that also influences the final vote. Moreover, it often happens that many undergraduates, despite having successfully passed the exams with very high marks, have never written a text to be submitted to the correction of the teachers and the last memory of a writing of this kind goes back to the theme of high school. Those who are faced with this great obstacle are asked: to which example of graduation thesis should they be inspired to get a good grade?
How to write a thesis
‘How to do a degree thesis’ is not only the famous title of an essay by Umberto Eco in which the great writer and university professor provides his students with practical technical and editorial advice, but it is the recurring question of the students who , having arrived at the end of their university career, they try to group ideas together to understand how to make a paper that can be at least decent.
The preliminary step is to obtain the assignment of a topic and its title. In general, it is preferable to request the thesis from the teacher of the preferred subject with which the best grade was obtained in order to make the research phase easier. If the topic is known in depth it becomes easier to argue and carry out research.
It is necessary to go, in the established days of reception, to the department, preparing a sort of list of topics to propose. In some cases, it is the teacher himself who gives the subject, for example starting from a book or an event that actually happened, like a personal experience of the graduating student.
The next phase involves a search for the material necessary for writing, at the university library and on the internet.
Finally, when you have all the information, you start with the actual drafting. The timing varies depending on the complexity of the topic, there is no general example of degree dissertation, let’s say from a minimum of three months up to a maximum of one year.
How to do research
In the preparation of the thesis the research phase is certainly the most difficult one because it requires work and patience. It is good to first highlight what absolutely should not be done in this period, that is to find superficially interesting contents and copy them entirely.
Copying your degree thesis is a very wrong thing not only on a moral level, but also because it is totally useless because now all the Italian faculties are equipped with anti-plagiarism software that identifies non-original texts.
Whoever thinks of speeding up delivery times by copying makes a serious mistake because if the teacher realizes that the student is not behaving properly, in addition to losing confidence and inevitably high grades, he will be forced to assign a new topic and therefore to lengthen the works.
Therefore, it is good to perform a thorough research in the library, selecting the most significant texts, and elaborating an autonomous thought inspired by what has been read. In other words, everything that is considered interesting about books must be reproposed in their own words also to make the examining commission understand that they are masters of the subject.
How to proceed with writing the thesis
The degree thesis, as already underlined, is the final thesis with which the student presents to the examining commission the in-depth study of a specific topic.
Therefore, being a written text, it is made up of different elements, necessary for the overall reading. The techniques for writing the thesis can be different, there is no single method because each approaches the subject in its own way.
For example, for some the drafting of the thesis consists in throwing on paper some ideas to be reworked at the end, while for others it comes to the writing phase only at the end of the path of internalization of the topic. In any case, in most cases, the drafts are corrected several times, even with the help of the teacher, so as to create an organic work, easy to read and easy even during the exhibition on the day of the discussion.
The most interesting theses, on the initiative of the teacher and the university, for the high academic value, are printed and in some cases are then used as real textbooks or monographs dedicated to a specific theme.
With reference to the layout, that is how the writing appears placed on the white sheet which is then printed and bound in copy shop, it is necessary to follow some small tricks to make the whole much more pleasant and to favor reading.
We must not forget that the thesis is a book so in some way it must entice the reader to take a look at it, for example, to see pages characterized by thick words, without spaces, it is certainly not a very attractive circumstance, usually the spacing more recommended is the multiple line spacing, equal to 1.5 mm, or exact, equal to 2 mm, adjustable at will.
The most suggested writing is the classic one, such as the Times New Roman or the Garamond in the most famous word processing program that is Word. The preferred font size is 11 or 12, while 14 characters are used for paragraphs and subparagraphs. Finally, the edges, especially the one on the left, must be of a size such that they do not interfere with the side binding, so about 2.5 cm on each side.
If the thesis also includes the insertion of images or graphics, to instill a greater visual impact in the reader, it is preferable to have color and a very high resolution. Many, to save money, choose to print their degree thesis at home and go to a copy shop only for binding, but if you have the patience to search and compare prices there are many extremely convenient points of sale.
How to write notes
When writing a degree thesis it is necessary to indicate the sources from which the material used is obtained, this operation is possible by inserting the notes.
The notes are written using the References button – insert the word processor’s footnote. The notes are sorted numerically and are found at the end of the page.
How much can you take from another text?
There is currently no law that establishes the percentage of text to be copied in order not to incur the crime of plagiarism of thesis. In fact, in order to be able to talk about plagiarism, the thesis must be gravely vitiated by a blatantly evident copy and paste, such as the total repetition of a text, even if interspersed with new or reworked fragments. However, in order not to slow down the work of correction and approval of the paper, it is preferable to write the thesis in full autonomy.
